For Artists

Welcome to Tears of the Phoenix. Before your muse gets carried away with some of our more interesting prompts, we wanted to explain the process.

As artists, you have three different way to participate.

  1. We are looking for front and back cover art. Once we have a title for our book (which will most likely be something along the lines of After the Rain), we’ll be accepting color submissions. Look for an announcement with more details in December.

  2. We are looking for artwork inspired by the prompts themselves.

  3. We will be looking for a few pieces of artwork to illustrate the selected stories. As with the covers, more information will be posted  for this option once the stories have been selected.

Before we go any further, we’d like to emphasis that we are looking for ORIGINAL works only. Please do not submit any fan art.

On (or around) Aug. 13, we will be posting the prompts submitted by our lovely librarians. At which time, you may let your muses loose and your creativity flow.

While we are using prompts as a basis for art, the way this works is different than the traditional exchanges that take place in fandom. First, you will NOT be assigned a prompt.
Secondly, you are not required to use the prompt in its entirety (these are merely suggestions). Thirdly, you are not limited to one prompt. Fourthly, more than one person may use the same prompt.

We just ask that you keep track of which prompts you use as we'll be listing the inspirations for each piece in the book in an author's note of sorts.

Artists may submit up to 5 works.

All prompt and story illustration art should be black and white works at 400 dpi with a maximum size of 5-by-8-inches.

Cover art submissions must be CMYK, 400 dpi and no more than 6-by-9-inches (with an additional 1/8-inch bleed if necessary).

All prompt-based art must be submitted to submissions@tearsofthephoenixanthologies.org by midnight Nov. 30. Deadlines for cover art and story illustrations will follow in the spring.

Once accepted, authors will be asked to sign a first print rights/exclusive rights contract that basically means you agree that art is, in fact, your own work and that you will not post/submit or otherwise publish this art for the duration of the contract which will be through June 2009. After which time, all rights revert back to you, and you may do with it as you will.
