For Writers Welcome to Tears of the Phoenix. Before your muse gets carried away with some of our more interesting plot bunnies, we wanted to explain the process. As this project was inspired by Harry Potter-related activities, we are opening up the submission process to Harry Potter fans first. Before we go any further, we’d like to emphasis that we are looking for ORIGINAL works only. Please do not submit any fan fiction. On Aug. 13, we will be posting the prompts submitted by our lovely librarians. At which time, you may let your muses loose and your creativity flow. While we are using prompts as a basis for stories, the way this works is different than the traditional exchanges that take place in fandom. First, you will NOT be assigned a prompt. The prompts are meant to inspire you more so than limit you to write a specific story within their parameters. A story can be a combination of several prompts, just as a story can contain multiple characters, each based on a different prompt. (To see some examples of how this was done with our last book, click here.) We just ask that you keep track of which prompts you are incorporating in your story as we'll be listing the inspirations for each piece in the book in an author's note of sorts. When submitting a story, we ask that you please adhere to traditional (U.S.) publishing submissions formatting. This differs from fan fiction archive formatting, so if you are unfamiliar with it, please read the guidelines before submitting, as works not adhering to them will not be read. Writers can submit:
If you are writing what you think is a brilliant story and it goes beyond 5,000 words, please contact us directly at submissions@tearsofthephoenixanthologies.org. All stories must be submitted to submissions@tearsofthephoenixanthologies.org by midnight Nov. 30. Works that appear in the book will be selected by a panel of five editors. Our goal is to include as many quality stories as we can within our page limitations. Stories will be selected based on merit and not prior publishing credit(s). We highly encourage first-time authors to submit pieces. Once accepted, authors will be asked to sign a first print rights/exclusive rights contract that basically means you agree that your story is, in fact, your own work and that you will not post/submit or otherwise publish this story for the duration of the contract which will be through June 2009. After which time, all rights revert back to you, and you may do with it as you will. Please note: This anthology will be submitted to the same process as other books, including editing for content, continuity and syntax. While no major changes will be made to any story without the author’s knowledge, there is a chance that commas will be added/deleted and minor errors corrected. Those of you who have submitted original stories for publication before are aware that this type of “clean up editing” is standard practice. However, if you are not comfortable with this, please do not submit your work. If you have any additional questions, please read our Frequently Asked Questions or email us at info@tearsofthephoenixanthologies.org |
